How to play H.O.R.S.E poker?

In a H.O.R.S.E poker game a different variation of poker is played every hand.

In 2025, the World Series of Poker introduced a $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event, and rotated games after each hour-long round, until the final table, when they switched to no-limit hold'em until the end.

How to play 7 Card Stud

7 Card Stud is the most popular version of Stud poker. 7 Card Stud is played with between two and eight players.

Players are dealt 7 cards, 3 of them face down and the other 4 face up.

The objective of the game is to make the best 5 card poker combination with the 7 cards you are dealt.

Ante

7 Card Stud is usually played with an ante. The ante(the forced bet) is approximately 1/5 of the low limit bet size. Every player must pay this ante before the hand begins. This ante does not count towards future bets.

Bring in

every player has one card showing after the first deal. the person showing the lowest card must 'bring in'. This means that this player must place 1/2 of the low limit best size into the pot. If two or more players show the same lowest card, the person closest to the dealer's left side must 'bring in'. This bet counts as the first round bet. When the hand is not raised this counts as the first round bet for that player and he or she doesn't have to put more money into the pot to see the next card.

Betting rounds

There are five rounds of betting.

With Fixed Limit Seven Card Stud all bets and raises must be equal to either the low limit or high limit bet size, depending on which round the hand is in. In the first two betting rounds all bets and raises must be equal to the low limit bet size. In the third, fourth and fifth rounds all bets must be equal to the high limit bet size. If you are, for example, playing 1-2 Seven Card Stud Poker all bets in the first two rounds are increments of 2 dollars and all bets in the last three betting rounds will be increments of 2 dollars. There is a maximum of 3 raises per betting round.

Betting Round 1:

All players are dealt wo cards face down and one card face up. The player shwoing the lowest card has to 'bring in', betting 1/2 of the low limit bet. He can choose to raise and place the full low limit bet. Moving clockwise around the table, each player folds, calls or raises. All bets and raises must be equal to the low limit bet size.

Betting Round 2:

All players are dealt a fourth card face up. The player showing the highest hand at this moment(highest of all would be two aces) is first to act. He may choose to fold, check or bet. Again, if two players or more are showing the same highest hand, the player closest to the dealer's left will be first to act. The game continues clockwise untill every player has either folded, checked, bet, called or raised. If a player is holding a pair at this point then he and all the other players have the option to bet either the low limit bet size or the high limit bet size. in all other cases all bets and raises must be equal to the low limit bet size.

Betting Round 3:

All players are dealt a fifth card face up. This round is played like the previous rounds, with the highest hand betting first but this round all bets and raises must be equal to the high limit bet size.

Betting Round 4:

sixth street

All players are dealt a sixth card face up. This round is played like the previous round. All bets and raises must be equal to the high limit bet size.

Betting Round 5:

seventh street

All players are dealt a seventh and final card face up. This round is played like the previous round. All best and raises must be equal to the high limit bet size. In the case of all eight players still being in the hand at this point there would not be enough cards left to deal every player another card this rare case a single card is placed face up in the middle of the table which every player is free to use to make their best 5 card poker combination.

Showdown

All players still remaining after the fifth betting round will now have the option of showing their hand and winning the pot. The person last to bet is the first to show their hand. This then proceeds clockwise. Players can also choose to muck their hand if they already know they haven't won the hand and don't want show which cards they played.

How to play Omaha

In Omaha players get dealt 4 hole cards.

This is followed by the first betting round. The betting rules are similar to the Hold'em betting rules.

A three card Flop is then dealt, followed by the second betting round.

Now the Turn is dealt, followed by the third betting round.

The last community card, the River, is dealt, followed by the last betting round. At showdown players have to use two of their hole cards and three community cards to make a poker combination.

So even if there are 5 spades on the board you must have two spades in your hand.

How to play Texas Hold'em

♣ The aim of the game

The aim of Texas Hold’em is to win the game by achieving a better five-card combination than any of your opponents. This will win you the betting money(the ‘Pot’). There are four betting rounds in which people will ‘Call’, ‘Raise’ or ‘Fold’ at various stages, until the last remaining players reveal their hands and the winners takes down the ‘Pot’.

The start of the game

♣ The ‘Dealer Button’

A Dealer button is placed in front of one of the players. Usually the dealer in a casino will place the button for you but in home games the person who gets to be the first person with the dealer button is decided by who hold the highest card from the dealing of one round of cards.

♣The ‘Blinds’

The two players to the left of the dealer place a pre-agreed amount of money in the pot, so that there is an initial amount at the start of the play. This is called ‘posting the blinds’. The person directly left of the dealer places the ‘small blind’, which is usually half of the ‘big blind’ which is placed by the person two seats left of the dealer.

♣ The ‘Hole Cards’

After placing the blinds the dealer shuffles a standard pack of 52 cards before placing two ‘Hole’cards face down in front of each player.

♣ The first betting round

After reviewing their two hole cards, the person directly after the big blind is first to act. Players can either ‘Call’(matching the amount of money or chips of the big blind), ‘Raise’(double the amount of the big blind or put even more chips in play) or ‘Fold’(moving their two hole cards face down towards the dealer which means that they don’t want to invest any money in this hand). The betting round is complete when each player has made their decision and when all the money in front of the players who decided to play is an equal amount.

♣ The ‘Flop’

After discarding(‘Burning’) the top card, three ‘community cards’ are placed face up in the centre of the table. This deal is called the ‘Flop’. These three community cards may be used by all players to create a poker combination in combination with their own two hole cards.

♣ The second betting round

Players place their second betting round but this time starting at the person directly to the left of the dealer button. The betting round is complete when all players have either matched the biggest bet or have folded their two hole cards.

♣ The ‘Turn’

The dealer burns another card, and places a fourth community card in the centre of the table. This deal is called the ‘Turn’.

♣ The third betting round

All players place their third round of bets. The betting round is complete when all players have either matched the biggest bet or have folded their two hole cards.

♣ The ‘River’

The dealer burns another card, and places a fifth, and final, community card in the centre of the table. This final deal is called the ‘River’. The players aim to create the best possible poker combination by using any of the five community cards and/or their own two hole cards.

♣ The fourth betting round

Players place their fourth and final round of bets. The betting round is complete when all players have either matched the biggest bet or have folded their two hole cards.

♣ The ‘Showdown’

Of the remaining players, the last person to raise their bet reveals their cards, followed by the others. This is known as the ‘Showdown’.

♣ The winner

The player with the best poker hand wins the game, and the ‘Pot’(all the money or chips from the previous betting rounds).
